Early life and education

Panwisawas was born in Bangkok and received a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 2008 at Department of Physics, Chulalongkorn University.[1][2] He came to the United Kingdom in 2009 and completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on the recrystallisation in single crystal superalloys[3] in 2013 at University of Birmingham. His PhD was supervised by Roger Reed.[4]

Career and research

After graduating from University of Birmingham, Panwisawas has joined the Centre for Advanced Simulation and Modelling (CASiM2) programme within Partnership for Research in Simulation of Manufacturing and Materials (PRISM2) research group as a Research Fellow at Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre,[5] University of Birmingham from June 2013 to May 2018. In June 2018, he has awarded EPSRC UKRI Innovation Fellowship[6] to conduct his project on additive manufacturability,[7] at University of Oxford and he became Senior Fellow and now an Academic Visitor at Department of Materials, University of Oxford.[8] During the period of 2020 to 2022, Panwisawas worked as an Associate Professor in Digital Manufacturing and Associate Director of NISCO UK Research Centre at School of Engineering, University of Leicester.[9]

In 2022, Panwisawas moved to London to take up a position as Senior lecturer (Associate professor) in Materials and Solid mechanics at Queen Mary University of London.[10] He is a Visiting Associate Professorship at Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Centre (NEXTA) at Shimane University,[11] a MMRI Affiliated Professorship at Metallurgy and Materials Science Research Institute (MMRI), Chulalongkorn University, Visiting Associate Professor at Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a Visiting Academic Collaborator Status at Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Davis.

Panwisawas' research[12] focused on multi-scale materials modelling of liquid/solid reactions, particularly in casting,[13] fusion welding and additive manufacturing[14] of high performance alloys using an integrated computational material engineering (ICME) framework.[15] He is a computational materials scientist to use modelling and simulation to gain in-depth understanding of melt pool physics, formation of defects and microstructural phenomena during selective laser melting.[16] or laser-based powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing. His work is done in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, neutron facilities such as ISIS Neutron and Muon Source[17] and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and X-rays synchrotron facility like Diamond Light Source, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.

Public engagement

In 2018, Panwisawas was elected to the Executive Committee of the Anglo-Thai Society[18] and an Advisor to the Samaggi Samagom to help the Royal Thai Embassy, London,[19] and to promote academic relationships between Thailand and UK.[20][21] He is also a member of The Association of Thai Professionals in European Region (ATPER).[22] [23]His projects aim to support the advancement of quality teaching, learning,[24] and research through partnership with international countries.[25][26]

Awards and honours

Panwisawas was elected a Fellow of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM) in 2019,[27] Fellow of The Institute of Physics (FInstP) in 2020,[28] Fellow of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) in 2021, and chartered as Chartered Engineer (CEng) in 2016. He received Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award (2009-2012),[29] and Anglo-Thai Society Education Award of Academic Excellence in Engineering (2012).[30]
